The island has many shore dives which have easy water entry and usually only a short swim. They are very affordable as they only cost the price of the tank which varies from $15 - $20. Gear Rental can also be arranged through our property manager who offers weekly rates, or at Sun Divers next door. Some of my favorite shore dives are;
Coconut Bay (Hepps Pipeline) : - My favorite shore dives are here at Coconut Bay. A short swim out from the ladder gets you to the buoy and from there you can go left (towards Macabuca) or right. Each is slightly different, The buoy is moored at the top of a mini wall which bottoms out at about 70 feet. The wall is more dramatic toward Macabuca but I have seen more turtles to the right. This is one of the best dive sites on the island. Known for its marine life and vibrant colors. It also makes a fabulous night dive!
Macabuca:- Just next door is Macabuca. It is the same wall as from Coconut Bay but what I would recommend is wandering down to Indepth Waterpsorts dive shop (Under Cracked Conch) and pre-booking tanks for a night dive. You can then turn up at the bar, watch the sunset, gear up and enter the water right there. The buoy is only a short swim out. The nice thing with this dive is it is hard to get lost. You can swim one way along the wall and then back. As you finish you will be able to see the bright lights from Macabuca which will guide you back to shore. Once out and packed away you can stop for a burger and a beer before walking back to Coconut Bay! https://indepthwatersports.com
Divetech:- has 2 locations. Their main store is a 5 minute drive at Cobalt Coast but they are also half a mile down the road towards George Town at Lighthouse Point. They are a great dive operation with a fabulous dock and wonderful shore dive. There are lots of options form here but very soon after you drop down from the buoy you will come across the ‘Guardian of the Sea’ statue which makes for great photos. They have a mini wall and also a line leading out to the main wall. https://www.divetech.com/
Eden Rock / Devils Grotto:- Just past George Town harbor you will see Eden Rock. This is best done on days when there are no cruise ships in town! The site is shallow but offers lots of tarpon and swim through which can be fun to explore.
Sunset House:- Carry along South Sound Rd from Eden Rock and you will quickly come to Sunset House. As an aside their store has some of the best camera gear and photographs thanks to Cathy Church ( a famous island underwater photographer). Sunset reef is made of fingers or coral heading out to sea. It is a lovely site and also has a statue sunk in the sand along with a world war 2 landing craft. Both are easy to find and again make great photos. https://www.sunsethouse.com/scuba-diving
Below is a montage of photos from various dives mostly at the sites listed above some are from night dives with the aid of a flashlight but all photos were taken with a GoPro rather than an expensive dive camera set up.
There are many dive operators on the island to choose from. The closest to us (and my personal favorite) for daily dive boats is Divetech who are about 3/4 of a mile down the road. In addition to boat dives they also offer classes and guided shore dives. www.divetech.com .
If you are going to do any boat diving and haven’t done it yet, the Kittiwake is a must. A fabulous dive through history. As for the rest of the boat dive sites, I don’t really have a favorite – there are no bad ones!
